- 1520: in Mexico, the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés and his men defeat the Aztecs at the Battle of Otumba.
- 1769: the expedition commanded by Gaspar de Portolà establishes a base in California at the port of Monterey.
- 1771: in California, the Franciscan friars Junípero Serra and Buenaventura Sitjar found the Mission San Antonio de Padua.
- 1808: at Medina de Rioseco (Spain), in the context of the Napoleonic Invasion of Spain, the French army defeats the Spanish at the Battle of Moclín, or of Medina de Rioseco.
- 1811: in Venezuela, General Francisco de Miranda hoists for the first time the tricolor flag as the official ensign of the First Republic of Venezuela.
- 1892: in Santiago (Chile), President Jorge Montt and the Minister of Public Instruction, Joaquín Rodríguez Rosas, issue supreme decree no. 1554, which created the Liceo de Aplicación.
- 1902: at Machu Picchu (Peru), the Cuzco landowner Agustín Lizárraga writes on a wall "A. Lizárraga, 14 de julio de 1902", which serves as proof that the American Hiram Bingham did not discover the citadel (on July 24, 1911). As early as the mid-19th century, the citadel had begun to be plundered by the timber businessman August Berns.[1]
- 1906: in the Philippines (invaded by the United States) President Macario Sakay (35) and his guerrillas surrender, accepting the amnesty promised by the American "governor". They would be hanged the following year.
- 1970: in Managua (Nicaragua), President Anastasio Somoza Debayle, Foreign Minister Lorenzo Guerrero Gutiérrez and the United States ambassador Turner B. Shelton sign the abrogation of the Bryan–Chamorro Treaty, signed in 1914, at the National Palace (now the Palace of Culture).
- 1979: in the United States, Secretary of State Cyrus Vance issues the Cyrus Vanc Note to force the resignation of the President of Nicaragua Anastasio Somoza Debayle, who was facing the Sandinista popular insurrection.
- 1999: in London, an agreement is signed between Argentina and the United Kingdom allowing Argentines access to the Falkland Islands.
- 2010: in the town of Tirúa (Chile) a strong aftershock of the 2010 Chile earthquake is recorded, of magnitude 6.6 on the Richter scale; it is felt throughout the Araucanía and Biobío regions.
- 2011: in Villa Martelli (Greater Buenos Aires), President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner opens the mega-exhibition Tecnópolis, which will run until August 22.
