Hispanopedia:About

From Hispanopedia

Hispanopedia is an interactive encyclopedia in Spanish based on a Wiki model, which seeks to build a fairer and more complete body of knowledge about the Hispanic world. It began on 1 August 2015, and already has 1 articles.

Through the participation of experts and enthusiasts, Hispanopedia aims to offer a broad and diverse vision of our history, culture and society, going beyond stereotypes and prejudices.

Our goal is to create a reference platform for researchers, students and anyone interested in getting to know and better understanding the past and present of the Hispanic World.

Hispanopedia is open to the participation of everyone who can contribute content on Hispanist topics from around the world, regardless of their identity, race or nationality. As an encyclopedia, we aspire to present content in a neutral, clear and objective way, without any kind of prejudice. This is something that is unfortunately often ignored on the Spanish Wikipedia, where genuine absurdities are published, in many cases with an anti-Hispanic slant typical of the Black Legend.

Also unfortunately, although we consider Wikipedia to be a wonderful project to which we contribute both content and donations, correcting those absurdities has become a battle lost in advance, since many of the administrators of the current Wikipedia clearly take an anti-Spanish stance, dismissing irrefutable documentary evidence while accepting other references of highly dubious origin. There are numerous examples of all this, and the worst part is that they are present in the Wikipedias of many languages, since in many cases they merely translate the same inaccuracies and slanders found above all on the English Wikipedia, almost never checking their accuracy.

On Hispanopedia most of the pages have been copied from the Spanish Wikipedia, and our work consists mainly of correcting and adding content to those pages. That is why on our site you will find content that has not yet been corrected, appearing exactly as it does on Wikipedia. If you spot such content and feel you would like to help us correct it, you can contact us through the "How to collaborate" section.

Authorship

All texts, images and multimedia content reproduced on Hispanopedia are dual-licensed under the terms of the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL), which means they may be used and modified by anyone, with attribution as the only requirement. It is the same type of license used on Wikipedia and other free-content sites.

However, unlike the Spanish Wikipedia, on Hispanopedia it is not whoever wants to that writes, but whoever is able to. You do not need to be an academic, but you do need at least to write correctly and knowledgeably, as well as to contribute sufficiently documented content with reliable references.

Another difference from the Spanish Wikipedia is that on Hispanopedia all editors write under their real first and last names, and their contributions appear in the History page of each article. Anonymous contributions are not accepted.

In this project form matters, but content matters even more. Articles should be as interesting as possible, but at the same time they should be easy to read, explaining topics concisely. As Alfonso the Wise would have instructed his translators of the Toledo School of Translators, content should be "plain to understand."

Attribution of authorship

The contents of Hispanopedia are the result of collaborative work, and the contributions that each editor makes to each page of Hispanopedia are permanently credited in the page history, which is publicly visible. Information on the authorship of images and other multimedia content, such as audio or video files, can be consulted on their description page, which includes the author, the original source and other relevant information.

Basic rules of Hispanopedia

To achieve an encyclopedia with quality articles that are homogeneous in format and structure, the following organizational and maintenance procedures suited to that end must be followed:

Fundamental principles of Hispanopedia

The fundamental principles of Hispanopedia are the same as those of Wikipedia (although we will surely end up adding more by consensus):

  1. Hispanopedia is above all an encyclopedia, and all efforts must be subordinated to that end.
  2. Hispanopedia articles must be written from a neutral point of view.
  3. Under no circumstances may material subject to copyright be contributed without the corresponding permission.
  4. Hispanopedia has a set of etiquette rules that must be respected.
  5. You should be bold when it comes to editing pages, although always using common sense.

Quality rules

In addition, three further basic rules are essential to guarantee the quality of the content:

  1. Hispanopedia can never be the primary source of the content. Published information must never ultimately come from Hispanopedia itself.
  2. All articles must be verifiable and must include references to the original sources from which the contributed information comes.
  3. The sources from which the information comes must be reliable sources.

Rules of coexistence

Contributors must always behave in a civil manner, always bearing in mind that the debates that may take place on the talk pages of each article have the sole purpose of improving it, never seeking to impose a particular agenda or specific points of view.

The future of Hispanopedia

We believe there is great interest in this kind of initiative, and that Hispanopedia will end up being a high-quality product that will serve as a reference on many topics related to the Hispanic world. If Hispanopedia also helps to dispel doubts and clear up misunderstandings (in many cases spread deliberately) about what the Hispanic world has been and is, we will be more than satisfied.

How to collaborate

For the moment we have disabled automatic registration. If you wish to collaborate with Hispanopedia, please send an email to colabora@hispanopedia.com, indicating the sections to which you would like to contribute content.

In the near future we intend to handle registrations and contributions in an automated way, although always bearing in mind the limitations set out above.
