Pedro Enríquez or Henríquez de Toledo, later Enríquez or Henríquez de Acevedo (Zamora, September 21, 1525 – Milan, July 22, 1610) was a Spanish nobleman, military officer and politician who held the title of 1st Count of Fuentes de Valdepero and was Lord of Cambados jure uxoris.
Biography
He was the son of Diego Enríquez de Guzmán, 3rd Count of Alba de Liste, and of Catalina de Toledo y Pimentel.[1]
After his marriage in 1572 to Juana de Acevedo y Fonseca, 1st Countess of Fuentes de Valdepero and Lady of Cambados, he adopted her surname and title.
In 1585 he was appointed Captain General of the cavalry of Milan, under the command of the Governor of Milan, Sancho de Guevara y Padilla. In 1589 he was named Captain General of Portugal; he defended Lisbon against the attack of the Prior of Crato, who had the help of the Englishmen John Norreys and Francis Drake, corsairs sent by Elizabeth I of England.
Placed in 1595 at the head of the tercios of Flanders, he took Doullens on July 31 and Cambrai on October 7, in the course of the war against France. For his outstanding merits, Philip II named him, in 1598, Captain General of Spain, Councillor of State and War, and Grandee of Spain.
In 1600 he was appointed Governor of Milan, where he became one of the great peripheral politicians of the monarchy of Philip III who defended the prestige of Spain beyond its borders in opposition to the pacifist policy of the Duke of Lerma. His actions were aimed at securing for the Spanish troops the transit from Italy to Germany and Flanders through the Valtellina, where he built the famous fort that bears his name in Colico.
